Neurodermatitis: classification and etiology

Neurodermatitis is a neurogenic-allergic disease that manifests itself even in childhood. The pathology is recurrent in nature, therapy is aimed at alleviating the condition and prolonging remissions.

Clinical manifestations

Today, medicine is known for several forms of neurodermatitis. The pathology is characterized by skin manifestations: patients have peeling and redness of the integument in places where the skin is thinnest (in the elbow folds, skin folds, on the neck, under the knees). Changes in the epidermis are accompanied by severe itching, so patients often scratch the rash, which leads to additional damage to the skin, the formation of wet wounds, and infection.

The disease requires constant monitoring and qualified treatment of neurodermatitis. At the PsorMak clinic you can receive comprehensive advice and adequate therapy from leading specialists.

Etiology

There are many reasons for neurodermatitis. Doctors agree that the pathology is hereditary. According to the latest studies, children with both parents have an 80% chance of developing neurodermatitis. If one of the parents has the disease, then the risk is reduced to 50%.

The second, no less significant factor is the allergic response. Neurodermatitis is inherently an abnormal response of the immune system to different types of allergens. The exacerbation can be caused by: animal hair, food, cosmetics and household chemicals, tree pollen, medicines, house dust, mold. One of the forms of therapy is the detection of the allergen and the exclusion of contact with it. During periods of exacerbation of allergic reactions, patients are shown antihistamines.

The cause of the disease, neurodermatitis, can be problems with the gastrointestinal tract. Liver pathologies, a tendency to constipation, abuse of junk food – all this leads to the accumulation of toxins in the body and causes a characteristic rash on the hands, feet and face. A balanced diet, drugs to support the gastrointestinal tract, and timely bowel movements can reduce the influence of this factor.

Often, neurodermatitis can be a manifestation of psychosomatic problems. A depressed emotional state, stress, excessive intellectual stress affect metabolism, initiate exacerbations. Violation of the regime and sleep disorder, the patient’s inner experiences also worsen the course of the disease.

Medications, medications (not only the active ingredient, but also dyes, flavorings) can provoke a relapse. People with a diagnosis of neurodermatitis are vaccinated only in a state of remission; the doctor must take into account the clinical and immunological status and reactions to previous vaccinations.

The cause of neurodermatitis in children may be the mother’s malnutrition during the feeding period. Pathological manifestations can be caused by an incorrectly selected mixture during artificial feeding.

Forms of neurodermatitis

The classification of neurodermatitis is based on the nature of the lesion, the localization of the rash, the area of damage to the skin. According to the prevalence of neurodermatitis, three forms are distinguished.

  • Limited-localized, characterized by lesions of up to 10% of the skin. Changes in the epidermis are located in the elbow and popliteal folds, on the skin of the hands and face.
  • Common neurodermatitis is diagnosed with skin lesions from 10 to 50%. In addition to folds, the shoulders, forearms, thighs, and legs can be involved in the pathological process.
  • Diffuse. Diffuse lesion is said to be when pathological areas occupy more than 50% of the skin and includes the scalp.

By the nature of the rash, doctors distinguish the following types of neurodermatitis.

  • White. It is characterized by depigmentation of problem areas.
  • Decalvating. Differs in the development of alopecia.
  • Psoriasiform. If there is profuse flaking.
  • Verrucous or hypertrophic. It is found mainly on the shins.
  • Linear. Looks like stripes on the folds of the limbs.

The disease in any of its forms leads to physical and psychological discomfort, so it is definitely not worth postponing a visit to the doctor. In the clinic “PsorMak” you can get qualified preventive and therapeutic assistance from specialists of different profiles. We have experienced dermatologists who will help identify the causes of rashes and prescribe an adequate treatment regimen.
